GAROWE (SD) -The President of the Puntland regional state, Said Abdullahi Deni, has announced that Puntland is conducting a study to implement its shilling currency in 2025.
Deni stated that Puntland has long awaited the Somali federal government to issue new currency, but since nothing has materialized, they are compelled to take the decision to create their own currency.
In his speech, President Deni mentioned that the situation in Somalia is currently at a dangerous point, making it difficult to maintain unity and governance. He suggested that the institutions meant to serve the people appear to be oppressing individuals or dismantling the government.
“There are many federal countries in the world that have two different currencies, which does not mean we are abandoning our Somali identity. However, we want Puntland to have its own currency, and we want you to start its study and pursue it,” said Said Deni.
He added, “We have been waiting for a unified Somali shilling for a long time, but it is not forthcoming. The Puntland government has been working on this decision for some time, and the study is ongoing.”
President Deni expressed hope that by 2025, Puntland will have its own currency, which will later align with Somalia’s financial system when the “consciousness” and “mindset” return, and the Somali people agree to a unified system.
