Garowe (SD) – The Chairman of the Puntland Interim Electoral Commission Guled Salah Barre, who reported on the Commission’s work in preparing for the multi-party system, said they plan to hold one person one vote in Sool and Sanaag this year.
Chairman Guled Salah added the committee has prepared all the guidelines and rules for implementing the multi-party program, in order to move away from the clan system and facilitate a one person one vote.
When asked about the disputed regions of Sool and Sanaag, the Puntland Electoral Commission Chairman Guled Salah said “We will hold one person one vote elections in Sool and Sanaag, in the middle of this year”.
most of the disputed Sool and Sanaag regions are currently controlled by Somaliland.
The chairman also pointed out that the Commission has procured a modern Voter Registration Equipment, with Face recognition technology, making it impossible for anyone to vote twice.
The chairman reported that the by-elections will be held in three districts in Puntland in the middle of this year, which will be a test of the implementation of the elections.
