GALKAYO (SD) – Puntland and Galmudug states will launch joint operations against al-Shabaab barely a week after deadly fighting between Somali army and the militant group in central Somalia.
During a meeting between Security officials from Galmudug and Puntland in Galkayo town, the states agreed to cooperate on the security of Mudug.
Speaking to media, Galmudug security minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi said the security forces from both states will intensify operations against the militants in the region.
“We have agreed to join our hands by enhance the fight against al-Shabaab fighters in the region. In the forthcoming days, the operations to clear the region will start in different parts,” Fiqi said.
The development comes a day after officials from Puntland state handed over military equipment and vehicles to the Galmudug administration.
The donation includes eight military pick-ups, one ambulance, a water tanker and other military equipment.
Puntland officials said the move is part of the neighbourliness, co-operation and collaboration between the two administrations so that their people can live in peace.
Fiqi thanked Puntland for its support in liberating Galmudug from Al-shabaab.
