Puntland gets the first COVID19 vaccine in Somalia

Garowe (SD) – The COVID-19 vaccine is expected to arrive next week in Garowe, the capital of Puntland State of Somalia, Making it the first deployment across Somalia.

Enough vaccines for more than 300,000 people are scheduled to arrive in the capital Garowe next week, according to Puntland’s Director General of the Ministry of Health Abdirizak Hirsi Hassan.

The Puntland administration did not elaborate on the order in which people will be vaccinated.

The vaccine, is currently in Nairobi, and are scheduled to arrive in Puntland on March 24-25, with Garowe being the first launch of the COVID-19 vaccinations in the country.

Somali areas in the Horn of Africa such as Djibouti and the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia have already received the vaccine.

It is unclear how Garowe become Somalia’s vaccination launch city, but the COVID-19 vaccines arrives the country at a time when the virus resurgence if felt around the country.
