Puntland gov’t cancels public forum to be addressed by federal poll agency boss

GAROWE (SD) – Puntland state in northeastern Somalia has cancelled public forum to be addressed by FIET chairman in Garowe town.

In a statement, the organisers of event, Madasha Daljir Media said the minister of Interior Mohamed Dhabanad ordered the cancellation of the meeting when all participants were already in the hall.

There was no immediate reason for the move but it came as Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni sacked police boss Hasan Abdi Yare who had met with Irro earlier in the day.

Irro also met with Deni earlier in the week following the conclusion of the district council elections.

The development comes just hours after Puntland President Saed Abdullahi Deni sacked the state’s police commissioner, Hassan Abdi Yare.

Prior to the sacking, the dismissed officials meet the chairman of the Federal Indirect Elections Team Mohamed Irro.

Deni replaced Yare with brigadier Mohamed Hashi to head the police forces in the state.

Deni said in the statement that he had consultation with Deputy president Ahmed Karaash.

Abdi Yare was appointed to the position in April 2020. His successor, General Mohamed was until his appointment the Head of police in Bosaso port.
