GAROWE (SD) – Puntland on Saturday celebrated the 28th anniversary of its establishment with a large ceremony in Garowe, attended by senior government officials, military commanders, traditional elders, lawmakers, and thousands of residents.

The event featured a military parade showcasing units from the Puntland Dervish Forces, Police, Navy, Presidential Guard, and other security agencies. Armored vehicles and military equipment were displayed as officials highlighted the administration’s security capabilities.

The anniversary comes amid significant political and security challenges, including tensions with Somalia’s Federal Government, ongoing operations against militant groups, and efforts to improve public services and economic development.

Established in 1998 as a federal member administration of Somalia, Puntland was created to promote security, governance, and reconstruction without seeking independence. Over the past 28 years, it has remained an influential political and security actor within Somalia.

The anniversary celebrations served not only as a commemoration of Puntland’s founding but also as a demonstration of institutional continuity and military strength during a period of heightened political tensions. The prominent display of security forces reflects Puntland’s emphasis on maintaining internal stability and reinforcing its position as a key regional administration amid ongoing disputes with the Federal Government and persistent security challenges.
