Hargeisa (SD) – A Qatari government delegation is expected to visit Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, on Wednesday, delivering a large aid package, according to sources.
According to the sources, the delegation we will arrive at the end of next week, accompanied by a large medical aid, which will help the Somaliland government in its fight against Covid-19.
Qatar’s government is often regarded as having close ties to the federal government, the visit and the aid is seen as Qatar’s way of establishing a political relationship with the self declared independent nation.
The Qatari move could upset its political emissaries such as UAE and Saudi Arabia, who have Luke warm relationship with Somaliland, likewise, the move could jeopardize their relations with Somali Federal Government of Somalia.
On the other hand, advocates for the jailed journalist Oldon, are hopeful the Qatari delegation would request his release, according to the sources close the matter.
Abdimalik Oldon who is currently serving a three year jail sentence lived and was educated in Qatar.
The visit and the aid will be the first of its kind directly delivered to the government of Somaliland by the government of Qatar.
