The Somali government has considered this decision a crucial and long-overdue step. After years of extensive efforts by Somalia to combat the arms ban, the Security Council has finally resolved to lift the arms embargo following today’s vote.
Fourteen out of the fifteen member states of the Security Council have agreed to the imposition of an arms embargo on Somalia, marking a significant international consensus. The Somali government has declared that lifting the arms embargo is a vital measure to enhance the restructuring of its military capabilities, ensure national defense, and contribute to the peaceful and secure future of the nation.
Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, has congratulated the Somali people on the historic decision made by the United Nations Security Council to lift the arms embargo.
