SNA destroys al-Shabaab bases in Lower Shabelle region

MOGADISHU (SD) –  Several al-Shabaab fighters were killed and training bases in Lower Shabelle region destroyed in security operations,  Somali military confirmed. 

In a brief statement, Somali military said Danab forces had attacked al-Shabaab locality, prompting clashes with the militants.

“Somali Army’s commandos Danab destroyed Al-Shabab hideouts and killed several terrorists in a planned security operation near Leego village in Lower Shabelle region, on Saturday,” the statement reads in part.

The operations comes barely two days after Jubbland forces backed by Somali military destroyed al-Shabaab bases near Bula-Haji on the outskirts of Kismayo town in Southern Somalia

Somali forces have recently intensified operations against A-lshabaab militants in southern and Central region ahead of the presidential elections.

Last week, the country’s elite forces intensified operations to hunt down al-Shabaab members in different parts of the country.

Early this month, National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) reported that the military equipment found in a bunker in the district of Huriwa included, among other means of warfare, mortar shells and bomb-making drums.

The agency also indicated in a document that during the mission it arrested three Al-Shabab militants, who will appear in court for trial.
