SNA kills senior al-Shabaab commander in southern Somalia

MOGADISHU (SD) – More than 16 militants including senior Al-Shabaab commander were killed and several of fighters were wounded following heavy clashes with Somali forces in central and southern Somalia, officials confirmed.

The operations took place over the weekend.

Somali military and other regional forces in south and central Somalia have intensified operations to liberate villages and towns under al-Shabaab control.

Troops from African Union Mission in Somalia (Amisom) also help the military defeat the militants.

Since 2007 when the forces contributed by African countries arrived in the horn of Africa nation, the militants lost many towns including the capital after they were defeated in battles.

Speaking to the SNA owned radio, military officials said Mohamed Abdi Suubiye, better known Toosoow, a senior al-Shabaab ring leader was killed last Saturday after clashing with Somali forces in Darussalam village near Aadan Yabaal town of Middle Shabelle region.

According the military officials, Toosoow was behind a series of attacks on civilians and security forces including military bases in south of the country.

The military also killed 15 al-Shabaab fighters in fierce fighting after the militants ambushed the SNA soldiers in an area between Dhusamareb town and El-Dhere village in Galmudug state.

SNA spokesman, Ali Hashi Abdi said that the army also injured several insurgents and recovered weapons during the fighting near Dhusamareb town, the administrative capital of Galmudug state.

Al-Shabaab has commended on the clashes with Somali military over the weekend.
