Wanlaweyn (SD) – Details have emerged from a planned operation by Somali government forces, particularly Danab, in parts of the Lower Shabelle region in recent hours.

The operation in Wanlaweyn district resulted in the capture of a senior al-Shabaab official, identified as Mohamud Mohamed Sheikh Ali.

Officials from the Somali National Army giving details on the operation said the captured officer was the head of al-Shabaab’s assassinations division.

The military officials briefing the media also pointed out that the Al Shabab leader arrived in Wanlaweyn district last night, leading to the troops storming his house.

Al-Shabaab has not yet commented on the arrest of the officer.

In recent times, federal government forces have stepped up operations against al-Shabaab in the south and central regions of the country.
