Somali government discusses drought relief with UN, US

MOGADISHU (SD) – Special Envoy of the President of Somalia for drought relief, Abdirahman Abdishakur today met with visiting US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland.

The meeting focused on relief for the drought-stricken Somali people, and was also attended by US Ambassador to Somalia Larry Andre, USAID Chief of Mission, Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and heads of agencies WFP, UNICEF, FAO.

Participants exchanged information and suggestions on how to respond quickly to the drought-affected population, and to provide international relief and support.

Envoy Abdirahman Abdishakur thanked the United States Government for its continued support to the people of Somalia, and pledged that the Government of Somalia would make every effort to assist those affected by the drought and to facilitate relief efforts.
