Somali MPs write to the Speaker of the house about new taxes

MOGADISHU (SD) -Some members of Somalia’s parliament have written a letter to the Speaker of the House, requesting that the agenda for the upcoming parliamentary session include a discussion on the growing complaints and protests resulting from the new taxes imposed by the Ministry of Finance.

The MPs expressed the need to address the complaints from various business groups, including Bajaj (Rickshaw) drivers and traders who import goods through the Port of Mogadishu.

The MPs also voiced concern about the impact that the direct account deductions planned by the Ministry of Finance, set to take effect tomorrow, August 18th, could have on the country’s stability.

Additionally, reports suggest that a major protest is being organized in Mogadishu tomorrow, with plans for businesses to shut down as part of the demonstration.
