Somali parliament sacks PM, President appoints The Deputy PM

Mogadishu (SD) – The Speaker of the Somali lower House Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman, after today’s session of the parliament, announced that the lower House has lost confidence in the Prime Minister of Somalia, Hassan Ali Khaire.

Mursal, who spoke after a raucous session of parliament today, said 170 lawmakers had said they lost confidence in the government and eight lawmakers had voted no to the motion, adding that no one had abstained.

Speaker Mursal also accused the government of failing in the 2020/2021 elections, the status of Mogadishu and the finalization of the constitution.

The speaker called on the president to nominate a new prime minister, to expedite the work expected of the Somali federal government.

Meanwhile, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo has accepted the decision of the Lower House in sacking the Prime Minister and issued a presidential decree appointing Mahdi Mohamed Guled (Khadar) the Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia to run and manage the activities of the Cabinet on an interim basis.

“As per the Constitution, the Acting Prime Minister, His Excellency Mahdi Mohamed Guled (Khadar) will be in charge of directing the activities of the government until the appointment of a Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia.” Said Farmajo.

Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheyre returned to the capital Mogadishu after the vote of no confidence in parliament, returning from Dhusamareb, the capital of Galmudug state.

There is no word yet from Hassan Ali Kheyre’s office on his return and dismissal, and he is expected to hold a press conference later, where he will provide more information.

Kheyre’s dismissal has sparks a possible feud in the country, and it is rooted in Villa Somalia’s plans for a term extension.
