Somalia: Al Shabaab attacks security forces and suspected drug dealers

Mogadishu March 11, 2023 (SD) – A battle erupted in the district of Hiliwaa, especially in the Suuqa Xoolaha neighborhood, in Mogadishu between the Somali police and alleged Al-Shabaab militants.

According to reports, the clash started after the militants attacked a police station in Baar Jowhar, which led to a 30-minute-long battle. The fight reportedly resulted in significant damage to both the police and the militants, and it is unclear whether any civilians were harmed.

After the militants were pushed back by government forces, the police raided their hideout, and the military leaders announced that they had captured several of the attackers. The district of Hiliwaa has experienced several attacks by militants, who reportedly use the area as a base for their operations, and residents have complained of the ongoing violence.

In other news, Al-Shabaab continues to target suspected drug dealers in various parts of the city of Mogadishu and young men involved in gangs. Al-Shabaab militants killed a young man named Abdi Justo in the Tawfik neighborhood of the Yaqshid district.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the killing and stated that he was among those involved in drug dealing. Al-Shabaab said that the person killed was responsible for undermining the stability of the district.

The attacks by Al-Shabaab targeting those involved in the drug trade and gangs have increased in recent days. Al-Shabaab has carried out various attacks in Mogadishu, killing many people.
