Somalia and Djibouti leaders discuss new AUSSOM mission

DJIBOUTI (SD) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, held a meeting at the Presidential Palace in Djibouti with his counterpart, Mr. Ismail Omar Guelleh.

The two Presidents, accompanied by senior officials from both governments, discussed the deep-rooted relationship between Somalia and Djibouti, the situation in the region, and ways to further strengthen the cooperation and brotherhood between the two peoples.

President Ismail Omar Guelleh emphasized that the government and people of Djibouti will continue to support and stand by the statehood of Somalia, highlighting their efforts towards peace, security, and stability in the country.

President Hassan Sheikh noted that Somalia has reached the end of the African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) peacekeeping operations, and that a temporary operation will now commence for a short period (AUSOM), with the plan being for the Somali National Armed Forces to soon fully take over the country’s security.

Furthermore, the President of the Republic expressed his gratitude to the government and people of Djibouti for their fraternal support to Somalia, emphasizing the importance of strategic cooperation between Somalia and Djibouti.
