Somalia and Ethiopia reset relations in Turkey

ANKARA (SD) – A mediation summit in Ankara, hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, concluded with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in attendance.

The meeting, which lasted for several hours, resulted in an agreement based on a joint statement. It was agreed that all previously disputed issues, including the MoU agreement with Somaliland that caused the conflict, have now been resolved and are considered historical. Both countries will begin a new chapter based on mutual respect, sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.

The statement also emphasized that any future agreements must go through the Federal Government of Somalia.

On maritime issues related to trade, both countries agreed to follow a legal framework that benefits both nations and contributes to economic development while respecting Somalia’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity by international law.

The Federal Government of Somalia expressed its sincere gratitude to President Erdogan, the people, and the government of Turkey for hosting the summit and their efforts over the past eight months in resolving the crisis in the Horn of Africa.
