Somalia announces the conclusion of the Initial phase of Oil exploration

MOGADISHU (SD) – The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of the Federal Government of Somalia officially announces the completion of the initial phase of oil and gas exploration in parts of Somalia’s maritime territory. It has been confirmed that these resources will be utilized efficiently, equitably, and in a manner that benefits the country’s economic development and improves the livelihoods of the Somali people.

Accordingly, while carrying out its legal mandate and implementing the policy of the National Interest Government, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has signed production-sharing agreements with Turkish Petroleum (TPAO). Exploration and seismic surveys began in Somali waters on October 21, 2024, conducted by the Oruç Reis Seismic Research Vessel.

This exploration and seismic survey lasted 234 days, during which Turkish Petroleum collected extensive data on Somalia’s offshore oil potential. This data will be analyzed to determine the reserves and quantities of oil in the surveyed areas.

Today, June 15, 2025, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of the Federal Government of Somalia officially announces the completion of the first phase of oil exploration led by Turkish Petroleum (TPAO). The Ministry will share the next set of findings with the Somali public as soon as accurate and verified results are available.

The Ministry expresses its gratitude to the Turkish Ministry of Energy for its excellent cooperation and partnership, which facilitated the smooth progress of exploration and seismic activities over the past period.

The Ministry also extends its appreciation to H.E. Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre for their leadership in supporting the extraction and utilization of the country’s oil resources.

Finally, the Ministry assures the Somali people that the nation is on a path of progress, guided by transparency and fairness.
