MOGADISHU (SD) The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Somali government, Ahmed Moalin Fiqi, has accused some foreign diplomats of violating the sovereignty and unity of the country.
Speaking at a graduation ceremony for diplomats held at the ministry’s headquarters, Fiqi criticized ambassadors who observed the elections in Hargeisa, Somaliland, on November 13, 2024, stating that their actions exceeded their diplomatic duties.
“We plan to summon one of these ambassadors who blatantly disregarded the sovereignty of our nation,” said Fiqi, without naming the diplomat or their country. He confirmed that the ministry had requested their return to Somalia for discussions.
Fiqi emphasized that diplomats are expected to respect the territorial integrity of the country and recognize Somaliland as part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
“We warn all diplomats that any future statements concerning Somaliland must clearly state that it is a region within Somalia; failure to do so will result in appropriate actions,” he added.
The minister’s remarks follow a visit by several diplomats to Hargeisa to monitor the Somaliland elections.
