Somalia: Government proceeds with elections, opposition rejects the decision

Mogadishu (SD) – The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia Mohamed Hussein Roble met with the Presidents of Galmudug State of Somalia Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoorqoor, South West Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, Hirshabelle Ali Gudlawe Hussein and the Governor of Benadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu Omar Mohamud Mohamed Filish, and announced that the government has decided to engage in the implementation of the elections.

Somalia’s Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble with regional leaders have made the announcement after their meetings today that they will go ahead and hold elections in the country.

Galmudug President Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qoorqoor) who was present at the announcement said efforts between Puntland and Jubbaland leaders and the federal government had failed, blaming Puntland and Jubbaland for failing to provide responses to Villa Somalia demands.

The Prime Minister called on all Somalis and authorities to work together in avoiding anything that hinders the implementation of an agreement reached in the elections of 17 September 2020, which is the basis for elections and reform process in the country.

Somali presidential candidates’ union spokesman Ridwan Hirsi Mohamed has accused Galmudug President Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoor Qoor of not being truthful about the election negotiations.

“We were surprised he said we have not replied, he had three days to get back to us and consult with us, Qoor Qoor never got back to us with a definitive answers” said the spokesman.

Former Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud speaking to a media at press conference held by the candidates’ union tonight, strongly condemned today’s decision by the federal government and some state leaders in the country.

Hassan Sheikh said the heads of states who supported the prime minister today, did not represent the people and regions elected them in their decision today.

He also said it was important to reunite Somalis who are tired of divisions and suspicion, the president should keep the country united if he is to govern, and if he is not, he should transition out with a united country.
