MOGADISHU (SD) -The Cabinet of the Federal Republic of Somalia held an urgent meeting today to discuss the impact of the widespread heavy rains causing severe flooding in many parts of the country.
Chaired by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the meeting received a briefing on the ongoing relief efforts from the Prime Minister of the Federal Government, Hamza Abi Barre. He stated that the government has established a national-level committee to address the needs of the affected Somali people due to the El Niño-induced heavy rains.
The President, addressing the meeting, praised the government for its efforts in responding to the urgent needs of the Somali people affected by floods. He urged the committee members to intensify their efforts and called on the public to be cautious in flood-prone areas, such as riverbanks and low-lying areas.
The Mayor of Mogadishu and Governor of Banadir Region, Yusuf Hussein Jimale, participated in the meeting and provided a report on the impact of the floods in Banadir Region. The meeting focused on discussing immediate measures to address the challenges posed by the ongoing heavy rains, which have resulted in loss of life and property.
Today’s meeting did not produce prompt and effective strategies to further mitigate the consequences of the floods and prevent further loss of life and property.
