Somalia joins the East African Regional Economic Cooperation

Mogadishu June 02, 2023 (SD) – The Minister of Federal Government Media Affairs of Somalia, Daud Awes Jama, provided a comprehensive explanation regarding Somalia’s membership in the East African Community (EAC).

The Minister of Somali Media Affairs stated that the representatives of member countries of the Union convened their 21st official meeting in the Burundian capital, Bujumbura, where they formally approved Somalia’s inclusion in the East African Community.

“As we have witnessed since the election of President Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, he has attached great importance to strengthening regional and international relations. In July, the President actively participated in the EAC Heads of State Summit held in the Tanzanian city of Arusha. It is also noteworthy that Somalia has achieved a milestone in its journey towards membership, bringing Somalia closer to becoming a full member of the East African Community,” said Minister Daud Awes.

He also mentioned that Somalia’s membership in the Union would bring numerous benefits in terms of diplomacy, societal integration, trade and economy, education, and various other collaborations.

The East African Community, comprising up to 8 countries, presents Somali businesses with ample opportunities to engage in commerce across all member states.
