Somalia: Military Officer sentenced to death for aiding Al Shabaab

Mogadishu January 12, 2023 (SD) – The First Degree Court of the Somali Armed Forces has today sentenced Sharif Mohamed Barkhadle Ayanle, a member of the Somali National Army, to death by firing squad.

He was found guilty of involvement in bombings and killings carried out by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab.

The court stated that Captain Sharif was arrested and found to have brought vehicles loaded with explosives into Mogadishu, and used them to carry out attacks on several commercial locations including the Village Hotel, Restaurant Afar, Baar Italia, near the Xamar-Wayne Mall, Agaweyne Restaurant, Ex Bilsan Restaurant, and other places.

The court stated that these attacks resulted in the deaths of 27 civilians and injuries to many others.

The First Degree Court sentenced Sharif Mohamed Barkhadle Ayanle to death by firing squad, according to the chairman of the court of the First Degree of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant Colonel Hassan Ali Noor Shute.
