Mogadishu (SD) -MP Abdurrahman Abdishakur Warsame, and the President’s envoy on humanitarian affairs have criticized Ethiopia’s statement regarding its intention to control or take charge of Somalia’s Zeila port.
Abdirahman Abdishakur, in a comprehensive statement, stated that this matter should not be taken lightly and requires attention from the government and the Somali people.
He also called on the federal government to take this matter seriously to safeguard the nation’s interests and counter Ethiopia’s aspirations.
His statement comes in response to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s recent remarks that Zeila port in Somaliland, may serve as an Ethiopian outlet to the sea.
According to Abiy, those who grant access to the ports may receive 20-30% of the revenue from Ethiopian Airlines, the Abay (Nile) water, or Ethiopia’s telecommunications company.
It remains unclear how this development will unfold, but it has raised concerns about sovereignty and territorial integrity, particularly given the close relationship between Ethiopia and Somaliland.
