Mogadishu September 06, 2023 (SD) – The United States has contributed millions of dollars to the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) to support efforts against Al-Shabaab.
The funds will be used provide vehicles, construction of security forces’ facilities in Somalia, and providing medical supplies to Somali security forces while meeting UNSOS obligations.
“It is important that the security forces of Somalia and AMTIS receive the necessary support to counter Al-Shabaab in the conflict areas,” said Shane Dixon, the U.S. Charge d’Affaires in Mogadishu.
“We are committed to supporting UNSOS, a crucial partner of the United States and Somalia in our shared goal of advancing peace.”
UNSOS currently provides support to approximately 15,900 members of the Somali security forces when considering the total demand for their support.
“The contributions came at a crucial time and will significantly impact our collective efforts in providing immediate support to the Somali security forces,” said Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, the head of UNSOS.
This support is an obligation of the UN Security Council, and its fulfillment has been welcomed by the Federal Government of Somalia.
