Mogadishu (SD) – Somaliland Political Council led by Chairman Abdi Hashi just announced that they will not participate Saturday’s election of the chairman of the Northern Electoral Commission.

The Federal Electoral Commission (FEC) has today announced that the election of the chairman of the Somaliland commission will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at Aviation Camp.

“The leaders of the National Dialogue Forum for elections, intellectuals and the Somali community in general, the Somali community in general, and the people of the Northern Regions (Somaliland) in particular, we hereby that no consensus has been reached in our meetings with the Prime Minister. Prime Minister Roble and members of his cabinet, including Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Guled in recent days, ”said a statement from the Somaliland Political Council.

Adding that they had tried several times to reconcile the differences with the other faction, but Mahdi Guled’s faction did not come up with any ideas or solutions to the standoff.

“We are informing Heads of Regional States, Somali intellectuals and stakeholders of the 2021 elections that it is clear that the Prime Minister has withdrawn from the agreements reached and the ongoing talks.” said a statement from the Somaliland Political Council.

Conflicts between Somaliland politicians in the Federal Government have resurfaced on several occasions with Prime Minister Roble unsuccessful in finding a solution to the dispute over who will be in charge of the Northern Electoral Commission.

It is noteworthy that members of Somalia’s Federal institutions from the North do not fully represent Somaliland in their said capacities.
