Somalia’s new Speaker and deputies of the Upper House elected

MOGADISHU (SD) – The election of the speaker and his deputies of the upper house of the Somali parliament has today concluded in Mogadishu.

Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, the former speaker of the upper house of parliament, won the by-election with 28 votes, while Salah Ahmed received 24 votes and Dubbe received 2 votes.

The interim speaker of the upper house of parliament has announced that Senator Ali Shaban Ibrahim has been elected as the second deputy speaker of the house.

The interim speaker of the upper house of parliament has also announced that Senator Abdullahi Ali Hersi “Timaadde” has been elected as the second deputy speaker of the house.

The result of the election of the Speaker and the deputies of the Upper House will boost the completion of the long running election process, and it is expected that the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives will be held tomorrow.

The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has congratulated Abdi Hashi Abdullahi on his re-election as Speaker of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament.

President Farmajo also congratulated the First Deputy Speaker of the Upper House, Mr. Ali Shaban Ibrahim, and the Second Deputy Speaker, Mr. Abdullahi Ali Hirsi Timaadde.

On the other hand, the Council of the Union of Somali Presidential Candidates issued a statement congratulating the newly elected Speaker of the Upper House Abdi Hashi Abdullahi.
