Somalia’s Parliament approves Electoral Law

MOGADISHU (SD) -Members of both houses of the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Somalia held a joint session today at Villa Hargeysa and approved the law establishing the National Independent Electoral Commission and Boundaries.

The Parliament passed this law with a majority vote, with 173 members agreeing to its approval. There were no dissenting votes or abstentions.

The Speaker of Parliament subsequently declared the law valid, despite some opposition from certain members.

The mandate of the National Independent Electoral Commission and Boundaries is to ensure the commission’s independence and the proper execution of its duties.

The commission is responsible for implementing elections at various levels in the Federal Republic of Somalia, conducting public referendums, and defining the country’s boundaries, under national policies and laws.
