Somalia’s President and Ethiopian Prime Minister have agreed to fully restore diplomatic ties

ADDIS ABABA (SD) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed have agreed to fully restore diplomatic relations between their countries.

They also committed to honoring previous agreements, including continuing the Ankara Agreement, which grants Ethiopia access to Somalia’s maritime system.

The two leaders concurred on collaborating in security, counter-terrorism, economic development, and regional stability, emphasizing mutual goodwill.

They agreed to establish technical committees to exchange information and draft formal agreements, paving the way for Ethiopia’s aspirations for maritime access through Somalia.

President Hassan Sheikh’s visit to Addis Ababa marks his first official trip following the Ankara initiative mediated by Turkey’s President.

Somalia and Ethiopia are resuming their diplomatic relations after ties deteriorated earlier in 2024 due to Ethiopia’s controversial and subsequently retracted agreement with Somaliland’s administration.
