Somaliland vows to take back control of its airspace

HARGEISA (SD) – The Somaliland government has announced plans to take control of its airspace with the assistance of international legal experts.

Somaliland’s Minister of Aviation and Airports Development, Fu’ad Ahmed Nuh, stated that one of his key objectives is to bring airspace management under Somaliland’s authority, which is currently controlled by the Somali government.

“There is a dispute between us and Somalia regarding airspace management, and we have planned to reclaim control of Somaliland’s airspace,” Minister Fu’ad said.

He elaborated on the process, explaining that Somaliland will pursue legal avenues and seek international legal expertise to navigate the dispute.

“We will regain control of our airspace through legal means. Our plan is to seek international legal support, which will facilitate the transfer of airspace management to us,” he added.

The minister also outlined plans to expand Somaliland’s airports, including renovations for Burco and Borama airports and the full operationalization of the modern Berbera airport.

In early 2024, a major dispute emerged between Somalia and Somaliland’s aviation authorities over airspace management. Previously, airspace control was handled by an international body before being transferred to the Somali government several years ago.
