Somaliland: Alarming increase in Covid-19 cases

Hargeisa (SD) – The number of cases of COVID-19 deaths and infection have risen exponentially in recent days in Somaliland, according to authorities there.

Since the resurgence of Covid-19 infection, the disease has reportedly spread rapidly in most regions of Somaliland.

Sahil and Togdheer regions are reportedly at the forefront, with the number of people infected and the number of people dying.

Director of Burao General Hospital Dr. Abdi Sudi Ibrahim speaking with the media yesterday said that in the first 19 days of this month Covid-19 virus killed 10 people in Burao, while 668 people tested, 224 of them were diagnosed with the virus.

Sahil Regional Health Coordinator Dr. Bashir Diriye Jama, who also spoke with the media, reported on the situation of Covid-19 in the region “625 people have been tested and 161 of them are positive. This is a very high number and three people have died this year,” said Dr. Bashir.

Togdheer regional Governor Mohamed Diriye Hayd urged the region’s community to get tested if they have any of the known Covid-19 symptoms, adding the testing is free.

Severe health conditions are also reported in Sanaag region, particularly in the towns of Erigavo and El Afweyn, with an increase in deaths from Covid-19.

On Wednesday last week, Somaliland received a COVAX donated Covid_19 Vaccine, and may begin vaccinations this week with Medical Staff.
