Borama (SD) – Somaliland security forces have today arrested four journalists working in Borama, the regional capital of Awdal region.

According to journalists in Borama, security forces arrested Ahmed Diriye Iltire, Hussein Aateye, Shuaib Mohamed Kahin and Abdillahi Dahir Wais, adding that the mayor of Borama ordered their arrest.

Borama Mayor Suleman Hassan Hadi is said to be behind the arrest of the journalists after they publishing reports of corruption and misappropriation of public funds in the district.

Mr. Saleban Hassan Hadi, is said to be outraged by reports that he has fled to Djibouti following allegations of corruption by the Office of the Auditor General of Somaliland.

Journalists’ rights groups and regional officials have not yet commented on the arrests.
