Somaliland: Court releases Prodemocracy Protesters

HARGEISA (SD) – Nine people arrested in connection with the recent prodemocracy protests in Hargeisa have been arraigned in Marodijeh Regional Court.

The Marodijeh Regional Court acquitted all 9 citizens after the prosecutors failed to prove that they have violated any laws, as public rallies are in shrined in the constitution.

Sources tell us that other prodemocracy protesters arrested six days ago and are held in Mandera Jail, will be arraigned in Marodi Jeh Regional Court on Thursday.

The detainees includes politicians from Somaliland’s opposition parties, whose relatives say they have been denied access to lawyers and medications.

Opposition parties opposing the postponement of the presidential election recently staged a protest in Hargeisa, leading to the arrest of citizens and opposition officials.
