Somaliland Expresses Concern Over Increased Drought Victims

HARGEISA (SD) – The chairman of the Somaliland National Disaster and Food Security Agency, Mr. Faisal Ali Sheikh Mohamed, has announced that in the next three months, the drought-affected population could reach about one and half million people, unless it rains soon.

He also noted that the number of people actually affected by the drought now stands about at eight hundred and ten thousand.

He also underlined that these people need immediate assistance to be rescued.

“Many regions in Somaliland have been affected by the drought, and the Spring rains have not been good. “We have sent a technical committee to the six regions of the country. The drought has affected 810,000 people, and is expected to reach 1.5 million in the next three months if God does not send rain.” Said Chairman Faisal Mohamed.

Drought-affected people are currently being assisted by the Somaliland Drought Commission.
