Somaliland Launches $100 Million Agricultural Development Project with U.S. Partnership

HARGEISA (SD) – The Ministry of Agriculture of Somaliland has announced a $100 million agricultural development project, funded by the U.S.-based company African Food Security, aimed at boosting domestic crop production and food security.

Key Details of the Project include the objective of increasing agricultural output to reduce reliance on food imports.

Funding is fully financed by African Food Security.

Signing Ceremony attended by President Abdirahman Irro, Minister of Agricultural Development Mahmud Egeh Yusuf, and Deputy Minister of Agriculture Mukhtar Haji Mohamed Farah.

African Food Security stated that Somaliland’s strategic location could position it as a future exporter of agricultural products to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

Current Challenges in Somaliland’s Agriculture include heavy dependence on food imports – Most consumed food is imported, while local farmers produce only a fraction of the national demand.

Water Scarcity poses limited irrigation due to arid conditions and insufficient investment in water infrastructure.

President Irro at the ceremony emphasized that enhancing food production is a top priority, as food insecurity remains one of Somaliland’s most pressing challenges.
