Somaliland: No Ihtikah and Taraweeh Prayers at Mosques

Hargeisa (SD) – Somaliland’s Minister of Religious Affairs Sheikh Khalil Abdullahi Ahmed ordered the closure of the mosque effective May 12th in order to limit the spread of the Covid-19.

Minister Khalil also ordered not to do Ihtikah(seclusion) or Tarawih prayers at mosques in the last ten days of Ramadan, in order to curb the spread of Covid-19 in Somaliland.

Ministry of Religion and the National Committee for the Prevention of COVID-19 has previously ordered the limit of prayer congregation at mosques.

The President of Somaliland, on the other hand, has repeatedly asked that the religious leaders of the country not to lead prayers at Mosques.

However, some scholars are still insisting on continuing prayers at mosques, as the Islamic world have shut down the mosques in an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
