Somaliland opposes constitutional prodemocracy protests

HARGEISA (SD) – The Somaliland Police has warned Somaliland’s opposition parties to hold pro-democracy demonstrations without permission.

In a video, released by the Somaliland police force, police officers warned the opposition parties against organizing a demonstration without permission.

“Unauthorized demonstrations that mobilizes the youth is illegal, and the Police’s role is to prevent these actions ” one of the officials said.

The official called on the public to help the police in preventing the demonstrations “we are informing the public to help us and monitor the issue”.

The constitution of Somaliland guarantees the right for political parties and the public to hold peaceful rallies.

The Somaliland Police forces have recently lost international funding due to their crack down on prodemocracy demonstrators in Hargeisa.

Somaliland’s opposition parties are planning further protest against the postponement of the presidential election on November 13, 2022 after mediations with the President Bihi broke down.
