Hargeisa (SD) – The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, while attending the graduation ceremony of 410 officers yesterday declared his intention to extend his term in office.
The president called on the armed forces to prepare for the three elections that will be held this year, which the forces will have ensure the security of the elections.
“This year we are facing three elections. In all three, the national army will play a major role. You have to arrest those who think they lost and secure the ballot boxes” said President Bihi.
The president has for the first time confirmed that he intends to postpone the presidential elections, a move that could destabilize Somaliland.
“The first of the three elections will be held in June. The committee will announce the registration of new associations and they will compete. The presidential election, as per the law, will be held on November 13,2022, then the new Guurti will be selected” said President Bihi.
Opposition parties in Somaliland have so far not responded to the president’s anti-democratic rhetoric.
President Bihi’s anti-election remarks comes as he is preparing to travels to the United States, were Somaliland is seen as a beacon of democracy.
