HARGEISA (SD) – Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi, addressed the dispute between the country’s electoral commission, calling for an end to the dispute through the rule of law.
An statement from the Minister of Information, Culture and Awareness of Somaliland Saleban Yusuf Ali Koore, confirmed that President Bihi met with the members of the Electoral Commission yesterday and called on them to resolve their differences through the rule of law.
The call and the meeting with the president came after the commission issued a contradictory statements stating that the chairman of the committee, Abdirashid Mohamud Ali (Riyo-raac), was removed and a new chairperson Kaltun Abdi was elected.
The rift within the Electoral Commission is said to be rooted in the country’s presidential election.
The president and his supporters believe that party elections should be held first, while some members say that the presidential election should be legally held first.
The president’s remarks are seen as stoking the current dispute with the electoral commission as it relates to the presidential election scheduling.
