Somaliland pressured into a ceasefire

Hargeisa Feb 10, 2023 (SD) – Somaliland has announced a unilateral ceasefire following days of deadly fighting in the city of Laascaanood.

The Somaliland government has also called for the withdrawal of troops from both sides and for dialogue to resolve the conflict.

The Minister of Interior of Somaliland, Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, speaking to the media, stated that the government of Somaliland is ready for any situation that may arise from the conflict in Laascaanood and that they will take measures to end the hostilities and promote peace.

He also expressed condolences for those who lost their lives in the conflict and called for an immediate ceasefire and dialogue to resolve the issue.

The news comes as the US government called unacceptable the repeated violence in Las Anod that has lasted for 5 days and put civilians at risk.

The statement comes amid ongoing clashes between Somaliland troops and residents in Las Anod, which have left at least 50 people dead and 150 injured over the past few days. There is no indication yet whether the fighting will continue or subside.
