Somaliland to regulate product shelf life

HARGEISA (SD) – The Somaliland government has issued new regulations requiring that all imported medicines, food, and cosmetic products must have at least 50% of their shelf life before expiration.

A statement from the Quality Control Authority announced reforms and stricter quality standards for all imported food, medicine, and beauty products at ports, borders, and airports.

Food items must have at least 60% of their shelf life remaining.
Medicines must have 50%-60% of their shelf life remaining.
Cosmetic products must have at least 50% of their shelf life remaining.

Many Somaliland citizens have complained about expired imported goods, with media investigations revealing that some businesses deliberately import expired or nearly expired food and medicines, posing health risks.

The previous Somaliland administration established a modern laboratory in Berbera to inspect the quality of imported goods, but there is still no clear report on its effectiveness or proper operation.
