Somaliland: UCID MPs form coalition with Kulmiye party

Hargeisa (SD) – Nine new elected UCID lawmakers have formed a political alliance with Kulmiye lawmakers, agreeing to nominate Faraton as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The new coalition nominated Prof. Yassin Mohamud Hiir (Faraton) for the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives, First Deputy Speaker Said Mire Farah, while Abdinasir Yusuf Osman (Qodah) was nominated for the post of Second Deputy Speaker.

Faraton said that if he wins the post of speaker of parliament, he will not discriminate between Kulmiye and opposition lawmakers.

“We have agreed to lead the 82-member House of Representatives well. We must not discriminate between the Kulmiye and the opposition, but in the interest of the country.” he said.

Meanwhile, UCID has stripped Abdinasir Yusuf Osman (Qodah) of his membership and position, after he and a lawmaker formed an alliance with the Kulmiye party.

A spokesman for the UCID party, has officially confirmed that Qodah has been expelled from the UCID party.

“The party has fired the deputy secretary of Qodah party, citing Article 7, paragraphs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8,” he said.

Abdinasir Qodah, The expelled UCID party leader, called his party’s decision illegal.

“I consider it illegal, and I can only be removed from office at the party convention not by a central committee and an executive committee. You can read the party’s rules,” he added.

Elected lawmakers from the Waddani and UCID parties have previously formed a coalition in the Somaliland House of Representatives, nominating an opposition leadership to House.
