Somalis and Afars reach a truce in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa (SD) – Afar and Somalis leaders met in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, and discussed the recurring violence between the two sides and how to achieve a lasting solutions to the conflict.

The meeting was attended by officials from the Federal Government of Ethiopia, traditional elders from both Somali and Afar, who have been working to find a solution to the conflict.

Participants said the conference was a success and that they hoped the terms of the agreement would be implemented, and could live in peace.

The Somali and Afar negotiating parties did not disclose the terms of their agreement.

Somalis and Afar Ethiopians are vying for territory along the border, and are the source of deadly skirmishes.

On several previous occasions, a reconciliation conference between Somalis and Afars has been held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, but fighting has resumed.
