BAIDOA (SD) – Southwest state of Somalia has today concluded the election of its senators who will be joining the 11th federal parliament of Somalia after election of three senate seats in Baidoa town.
Among those elected is Federal Defence Minister Hassan Haji Hussein who beat his opponent Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi garnering 74-14 seats.
Former Banaadir regional court judge Ali Sheikh Ga’al was the second to be elected in today’s vote. He got 68 votes while his opponent Abdikadir Abdi Ahmed trailed with 22 votes.
Abdiweli Mohamed Ibrahim was the third senator to be elected getting 68 votes while his opponent Abdullahi Robow Mohamed trailed with 18 votes. He now becomes the 8th Senator to be elected for South West state.
The state joins Puntland state in northeastern Somalia which concluded its senatorial elections.
Jubbaland and Galmudug state had also elected four and six senators respectively in the two weeks.
Senators representing Somaliland and Hirshabelle state are yet to be elected.
