Tensions Escalate Between Somaliland and SSC-Khatumo Forces

ERIGAVO (SD) – Conflicting reports are emerging regarding the ongoing conflict in the Sanag region, particularly in the city of Erigavo, involving Somaliland forces and SSC-Khatumo fighters.

The tensions, which have persisted in Erigavo in recent months, have intensified in recent hours, creating a highly volatile situation. Military activities have been observed in the area, with social media showing images and videos of armed and prepared forces on both sides.

Sources report that Somaliland forces, accompanied by armed militias, conducted movements in Erigavo this morning, signaling an escalation in hostilities. Similarly, SSC-Khatumo forces stationed outside the city are also mobilizing in their respective zones. This suggests that both sides are prepared for open confrontation, with no apparent peace efforts to resolve the standoff.

The Erigavo tensions have been ongoing for several months, fueled by earlier clan conflicts that deepened divisions among local communities.

The clashes have also affected other areas of the Sanag region, especially those near Erigavo, involving various groups from local clans. Many residents of Erigavo have fled due to previous fighting, leading to worsening displacement and humanitarian conditions.

The recent conflicts in Las Anod and surrounding areas significantly heightened tensions in the Sool region. Somaliland had previously lost control of Las Anod and other key towns in the region.

Currently, the focus of the conflict has shifted to Erigavo, which has become the central battleground. The SSC-Khatumo administration aims to wrest control of Erigavo from Somaliland, as they did with other towns like Las Anod, to establish full authority over the region.
