BAIDOA (SD)—A delegation from the National Electoral Commission and Boundaries Commission has arrived in Baidoa, the temporary capital of the South West State of Somalia.
The members of the electoral commission have come to Baidoa to accelerate the process of organizing the one-person, one-vote elections expected to take place in the country.
Yusuf Abdulkadir Mohamed, one of the commission members who arrived in Baidoa today, told the national media that their purpose was to resume operations of the electoral commission office in the city.
“We have come to Baydhabo to reopen the electoral commission office here, which has been inactive for some time, and to begin the process of organizing the one-person, one-vote elections,” said Yusuf Abdulqadir Mohamed, a member of the National Electoral Commission.
The independent electoral commission has previously faced opposition from the leaders of Puntland, Jubaland, and opposition politicians, who accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of using the commission to manipulate elections.
Recently, the National Electoral Commission announced the election schedule in Mogadishu and also stated that political party registration is now open.
