MOGADISHU (SD) – The National Security Advisor of Somalia, Mr. Hussein Macalin Mahmoud, provided detailed information about the new operational plan of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which is expected to officially begin operations in Somalia soon. This new AMISOM operation includes five countries: Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda.
Notably, Burundi has been excluded from the mission after failing to agree on the number of troops it was expected to contribute.
In an exclusive interview with state media, the National Security Advisor also highlighted significant progress in the country’s security and the ongoing fight against Al-Shabab.
Hussein Macalin Mahmoud emphasized that the plan for the coming years is to equip the Somali National Army with complete military capabilities, enabling them to take over the fight against terrorist groups that pose a threat to Somalia’s state-building efforts.
The new operation will include troops from Egypt, marking a shift from the previous plan that excluded Ethiopian forces. This change follows recent diplomatic efforts to improve relations between the leaders of Ethiopia and Somalia.
