The Somali ICJ judge resigns without explanation

HAGUE (SD) – The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has announced that Somali Judge Abdulkawi Ahmed Yusuf, a long-serving member of the court, plans to voluntarily resign from his position as an ICJ judge, officially stepping down on 30 September 2025.

An official press release from the ICJ noted that although his term was set to continue until 5 February 2027, Judge Abdulkawi decided to leave his post two years before the end of his mandate.

The United Nations, particularly the Security Council, is responsible for organizing the election process for a new judge to fill the vacancy left by Judge Abdulqawi.

Judge Abdulkawi Ahmed Yusuf, a Somali national, has been a member of the International Court of Justice since 6 February 2009. During his tenure at the ICJ, he also served as Vice-President of the Court (2015–2018) and later as President (2018–2021).

The Court has not disclosed the official reason behind his resignation.
