Hargeisa (SD) – Reports from Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland confirm that the sultan of Somaliland Sultan Mohamed Sultan Abdikadir Sultan Abdullahi has passed away tonight.

The Sultan was a key figure in Somaliland’s traditional and a cornerstone of peace agreements that have lasted to this day, and was a great cultural leader in Somali society, particularly in Somaliland.

The President of the Republic of Somaliland Muse Abdi on behalf of the Somaliland government and public sent his condolence to family of Sultan Mohamed.

“The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, on behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of Somaliland, sends a message of condolences to the family, relatives, friends, and the people of Somaliland, on the passing of the Sultan of Somaliland, the late Sultan Mohamed Sultan Abdikadir Sultan Abdullahi, who died this evening 12/02/2021 in the Somaliland capital Hargeisa.” Said the presidents statement.

On the other hand, the president of Somalia Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo sent his condolences to the family and relatives of the late Sultan Mohamed.

“May God have mercy on the late Sultan Mohamed Sultan Abdulkadir. He contributed to the peace and reconciliation of the Somali people. He was one of the leaders of Somali culture in his efforts to rebuild the nationhood of our country and the unity of our people, in particular by attending the Arta Conference in 2000 and becoming a Member of Parliament for the Transitional Federal Government.” Read an statement from Somalia Presidency.

The sultan was a descendant of a sultanate with long tradition and history in the Horn Of Africa region.
