Washington Feb 25, 2023 (SD) – A statement issued by the African Affairs Office of the US State Department posted on Twitter said that those responsible for the recent fighting in the city of Las Anod, which has been ongoing for three days and involves the military of Somaliland and opposing forces, will be held accountable.
The conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 96 people and over 500 injuries.
The Somaliland government has previously been accused of using excessive force against civilians in the city, resulting in many deaths.
The statement was issued on the day following the visit of a delegation from the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu led by Chargé d’Affaires Tim Trenkle, who had traveled to Hargeisa without prior notice and had discussed the situation in Las Anod with Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi.
The US government and other Partners urged Somaliland to cease hostilities and work towards a peaceful resolution, warning against any further escalation of violence.
